Vintage Zemmour Kilim - Middle Atlas (c. 1940 - 1960)
Dimensions: 6’9” x 9’6” (205 x 290 cms)
Handwoven mid-20th century by Berber women of the Aït Zemmour tribe in the Middle Atlas foothills of Morocco. This flatwoven tapestry features the classic Zemmour diamond medallions, symbolizing protection and harmony, with beautifully balanced natural tones of indigo, saffron yellow, and undyed wool. These textiles were traditionally produced in domestic workshops by women and served as bedding, ceremonial coverings, and dowry gifts within Berber households.
The piece is made entirely of hand spun wool with natural dyes and retains its original fringe. The large central diamond medallions are a protection motif: “eye against the evil eye” and fertility symbol. The repeating cross/diamond borders are tribal identity markers of Zemmour women’s weaving. The striped lower field is typical of Middle Atlas Hanbels, showing rhythm and color balance. The natural fringe indicates original warp ends (good sign of authenticity & age). A museum-quality tribal textile suitable for wall hanging, layering, or collection display.
