Zemmour Kilim - Middle Atlas (c. mid-20th century)
Dimensions: 7’8” x 11’8” (233 x 355 cms)
This flatwoven textile originates from the Zemmour tribal confederation, known for its fine, tightly constructed kilims that blend Berber geometric symbolism with influences from the Zayane and Zaer weaving traditions. The repeating horizontal bands feature lozenge, zigzag, and cross motifs symbolizing protection and fertility, executed in natural wool tones - walnut brown, undyed ivory, and vegetal red highlights - with a striking red kilim fringe typical of older Zemmour works.
Such pieces were traditionally used as floor coverings, dowry textiles, or ceremonial blankets, their intricate designs functioning both decoratively and symbolically as expressions of tribal identity and feminine artistry.
