Akhnif Rug - High Atlas (c. 1950 – 1975)

Dimensions: 6’6” x 9’10” (220 x 300 cms)

This striking Akhnif rug features a deep indigo field punctuated by minimalist geometric motifs - arrows, zigzags, and talismanic lozenges - woven in vivid natural hues of red, yellow, ivory, and green. The composition reflects Berber symbolism of protection and harmony, traditionally linked to Amazigh women’s weaving heritage. The decorative border and finely finished fringe detail showcase regional craftsmanship associated with the Taznakht cooperative traditions.

Akhnif rugs occupy a unique place among Moroccan textiles - bridging the tribal motifs of Aït Ouaouzguite weavers with the denser knotting of mountain pile rugs. Their designs often serve as symbolic maps of life and protection, used both as floor coverings and ceremonial textiles.
