Chichaoua Rug - Haouz Region, Morocco (c. 1940–1960)

Dimensions: 4’9” x 10’2” (155 x 315 cms)

This distinctive weaving originates from the Chichaoua area, a transitional region linking the plains of Marrakech with the foothills of the High Atlas. Chichaoua rugs often feature a structured geometric field framed by dense border ornamentation, as seen here with interlaced floral and latch-hook motifs in vivid red, black, and apricot on a lavender-grey ground. The wool is thick and lustrous, typical of the Haouz plateau’s flocks.

The rug demonstrates a hybrid aesthetic, balancing urban-influenced border geometry reminiscent of nearby Rabat designs with tribal abstraction characteristic of Berber ateliers. Its strong chromatic contrasts and tactile depth make it both an ethnographic and decorative piece.
