Moroccan Hanbel Flatweave (c 1960 – 1980)

Dimensions: 6’11” x 10’5” (210 x 320 cms)

This large Hanbel from the Zemmour region exemplifies the refined artistry of Berber women weavers in the Middle Atlas. These rugs are made from high-quality, soft wool sourced from local Siroua sheep, using natural, vibrant dyes. Woven on a natural ground, it features a free-form composition of symbolic motifs - crosses, diamonds, talismanic amulets, and stepped architectural forms - woven in vivid reds, golds, blues, and greens. The asymmetrical arrangement reflects the intuitive, story-driven design tradition of Moroccan tribal weaving, where each figure carries protective or auspicious meaning.

Hanbels were traditionally woven for ceremonial use or as part of a bride’s dowry. Their light flatweave structure made them versatile for covering walls, floors, or bedding, while their iconography served as both ornament and spiritual protection.
