Vintage Zemmour Hanbel Kilim – Middle Atlas (c. 1930 –1950)
Dimensions: 3’ x 4’5” (90 x 135cms)
Hand-woven 80+ years ago by Amazigh (Berber) women in the Zemmour region of the Middle Atlas, this vintage kilim features the traditional protective diamond motifs and finely executed horizontal pattern bands. Diamond lozenges in the main field represent protection, the eye, and fertility / life force in Amazigh weaving symbolism. Repeated smaller linear motifs (stripes, chevrons, crosses) are common in Zemmour tribal textiles. The broad border with repeating hooked motifs is also characteristic of this weaving tradition.
Woven from 100% hand-spun wool with natural and plant-based dyes (including indigo), the palette is a timeless mix of soft cream and faded blue-charcoal. Lightweight yet durable, this piece works beautifully as a floor covering, wall hanging, or draped over furniture.
