Zemmour Berber Kilim with Pile Panels - Middle Atlas (c. 1920–1950)

Dimensions: 5’ x 8’6” (152 x 260 cms)

This striking textile is a fine example of Zemmour weaving from Morocco’s Middle Atlas region. The geometric stepped border is strongly tied to the Aït Ouaouzguite weaving villages near Taznakht, in the Ouarzazate region of Southern/Middle Atlas. The design features richly colored diamond medallions framed by horizontal bands of symbolic motifs. There are sections of dense, knotted pile in tones of saffron, turquoise, brick red, and ochre, as well as panels revealing intricate flat-woven bands with multicolored zigzag “serpents” and chevrons representing water, fertility, and protection.

The natural dyes, earthy reds, saffron orange, madder, and indigo blues, are all consistent with pre-synthetic dye era of 75 to 100+ years ago. Zemmour textiles were traditionally woven by Berber women for domestic and ceremonial use, often serving as sleeping rugs or dowry pieces. Their combination of geometric precision and bold color reflects a sophisticated tribal aesthetic rooted in centuries-old Amazigh symbolism.
